Sholl Analysis

Sholl analysis is a method of quantitative analysis used in neural studies to compare and characterize the morphology of different types of neurons.

Our example has five main steps as shown in the analysis definition above:

Preprocessing

Enhancing the image using local contrast.

Neuron detection

Detect the whole neuron by thresholding to accurately recognize the number of dendrite branches with increasing distance from the neuron body.

Set of centric spherical shells

Creating spherical shells and their dilations.

Intersections

Highlighting intersections of the dendrite branches and the drawn circles and adjusting spherical shells dilation.

Graph results

Fine-tuning the final line chart to display a curve showing the circles and intersections counts.
