Indicative Measurement

Quick and approximate measurements can be performed using the graticule layer. They behave like adjustable floating rulers. User can simply align a graticule with the measured object and read the distance value (e.g. the diameter). To activate the graticule, press the Graticules button.

  1. Select Graticule Type

The type of the graticule ruler is indicated by a picture on the Graticules button placed on the right image toolbar. To change the graticule type, click on the graticules button with the right mouse button and select the appropriate item from the context menu:

    Rectangular Grid
    Circle
    Simple Circle
    Cross
    Industrial Cross
    Simple Cross
    Vertical Ruler
    Horizontal Ruler
  2. Define Graticule Properties

Right click the Graticules button and select the Graticules properties command from the pull-down menu. A window appears where display parameters (shape, color, line width, density of lines) of all graticules can be adjusted. Please see View > Layers Properties > Graticules Properties.

    Graticules Density
The density value - the closest distance between two line intersections of the graticule - can be set, or you can let NIS-Elements adjust it automatically according to the current zoom factor. The units selection depends on the image calibration (calibrated/uncalibrated).

    Note

Concerning the Cross graticule. The distance defined by Density is divided into smaller sections automatically. However, for odd density values greater than 10, the markings remain hidden because it is not possible to display them accurately.

  3. Measure the Image

The graticule measurement provides the following options in the graticule menu:

    • A graticule can be moved around by clicking on it and dragging.

    • A binary layer can be created from the current graticule using the Copy Graticules to Binary command.

    • A Graticule Mask can be created from the current binary layer using the Copy / Add Binary to Graticule Mask command.

    • A Graticule Mask can be stored/loaded to/from an external file via the Save Graticule Mask As and Open Graticule Mask ... commands.

    • Position of the graticule can be reset by the Move Graticules to Center command.

    • If Graticule Mask is set as a graticule type, its transparency can be adjusted using the Mask Transparency. In the Graticules properties, the opacity can be precisely set, mask can be rotated (Angle) and Calibration changed.

    • A new image containing graticules can be created by the Edit > Create Full View Snapshot (8bit RGB) command.
